Tampon Troubles: Why Does My Tampon Fall Out?

Why Does My Tampon Fall Out?
Reading Time: 4 minutes

Periods are painful and uncomfortable for most of us. Thankfully though, internally worn period aids like tampons help take the edge off a tough shark week and make our lives easier. For starters, you can swim and wear a bikini if you’re a tampon gal. Secondly, the absorbent period aid does the job without causing rashes like pads or giving you a constant reminder about what’s going on down there. But despite all the goodness, you may still be facing your fair share of tampon troubles. Your tampon falling out, for instance, could be a bit of an obstacle in your journey to ultimate period comfort. But don’t worry, it is a trivial issue we will solve right here, right now. Here’s everything you need to know about why your tampon falls out and what to do about it:

Why Does Your Tampon Fall Out?

The tampon working mechanism is rather simple. It is made with absorbent material pressed into an easy-to-insert cylindrical shape. Once inserted, it is held in place by your pelvic floor muscles and this grip becomes firmer as the tampon expands further after absorbing your menstrual flow. Every three-four hours, you can pull your tampon out using its string and insert a new one. Now, if it isn’t as easy as this for you and your tampon keeps falling out, here are four possible reasons that could be to blame:

Incorrect Tampon Insertion

Whether you’re new to the ‘tampon gal club’ or have simply inserted your tampon in a hurry, it’s possible that the period aid isn’t placed correctly. The result? Well, your tampon may fall out while peeing or exercising, or even while walking.

Wrong Tampon Size

If your tampon keeps falling out, chances are that you’re using the wrong size. If it’s too small or too big, it won’t create a proper grip with your vaginal muscles and is bound to keep coming out.

Excessive Pressure While Pooping

Applying pressure as if to poop is the go-to technique to remove a stuck tampon. It helps loosen the grip of your vaginal muscles on the tampon. So when you apply too much pressure while pooping without the intention of letting your tampon out, it may fall out automatically. Don’t worry about this one though. Simply put on a new one.

Overfilled Tampon

These tampons can provide leakproof protection for up to five hours. However, in case of heavy menstrual flow or prolonged gap between tampon changes, it may get overfilled, heavy, and thus fall out on its own.

What To Do If Your Tampon Keeps Falling Out

Now that you know why your tampon keeps falling out, let us understand how to keep it in place and enjoy a comfy period. Keep these points in mind and you’ll be just fine:

Use The Right Tampon Size

The first step is to ensure that you’re using the right tampon size for that perfect fit. Now, it may take you a bit of a hit and trial to find your true match. However, you can consider the intensity of your menstrual flow to make a better decision. For instance, a large or extra large tampon may be a better fit for those with a heavy menstrual flow.

Insert Your Tampon Patiently

Sit comfortably with your legs wide apart and open the folds of your vaginal skin using the tip of the tampon. Now, tilt the tampon slightly and gently insert it angling towards your back. Let it go in as far as your middle finger and thumb and place the secure its string safely. Finally, take a little walk test to ensure that it is comfortably placed and isn’t moving or falling out.

Change Your Tampon On Time

Make sure to change your tampon every three-four hours or sooner if your menstrual flow is heavy. This will prevent it from getting overfilled and heavy and keep it from falling out.
